By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Infantry) Walter R. McClure, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Captain McClure distinguished himself by gallantry in action and brilliant leadership while serving as Commanding Officer of Company M, 3d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Soissons, France, 21 July 1918.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Walter Rayburn McClure, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving as Commanding Officer of Company M, 3d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Soissons, France, July 17 – 23, 1918, and near Exermont, France, 4 October 1918. Captain McClure displayed exceptional gallantry during the battle at Soissons, 17 to 23 July 1918. From 4 to 12 October 1918, near Exermont, France, he displayed extraordinary heroism in leading his men forward under heavy enemy rifle, machine-gun, and artillery fire, successfully repulsing the enemy’s attacks.
