The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Michael P. McCarthy (ASN: 1392087), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 124th Machine-Gun Battalion, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Butgneville, France, 11 November 1918. When violent machine-gun fire had forced his company to take shelter, Sergeant McCarthy, with another soldier, braved the direct and short-range fire, by voluntarily going forward and rescuing a wounded officer, carrying him back to a place of safety.
