By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal James J. McCarthy (ASN: 1390530), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Corporal McCarthy distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 132d Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Bois de Fays, France, 10 October 1918. Although wounded he refused to go to the aid station, but remained on duty. [This award was rescinded under GHQ, American Expeditionary Forces, Citation Orders No. 8 (March 1, 1920) as the recipient has been awarded a Distinguished Service Cross for deed including this act.]
