The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal James J. McCarthy (ASN: 1390530), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 132d Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in Bois-du-Fays, France, 10 October 1918. After being severely wounded during an enemy barrage, and although bleeding profusely, Corporal McCarthy remained in line and reorganized a shattered detachment of the 39th Infantry and held the position in the line.

McCarthy (ASN: 1390530), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Corporal McCarthy distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 132d Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Bois de Fays, France, 10 October 1918. Although wounded he refused to go to the aid station, but remained on duty. [This award was rescinded under GHQ, American Expeditionary Forces, Citation Orders No. 8 (March 1, 1920) as the recipient has been awarded a Distinguished Service Cross for deed including this act.]
