The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Joseph A. McCallister (ASN: 1706239), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company H, 307th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Chateau du Diable, near Fismes, France, 27 August 1918. Corporal McCallister personally led his squad in an attempt to capture an enemy machine-gun, and after all of his men had been wounded and he himself severely wounded he withdrew, and, collecting other men, advanced three times to the attack, finally capturing the gun and driving off or killing its crew.
