While serving with Company F, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during a very heavy shell and gas bombardment near Grand Balois Farm on the night of 14 & 15 July, Private First Class May repeatedly volunteered to deliver messages over routes where all previous runners had either been killed or wounded.
