The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant George J. May (ASN: 1387659), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company G, 131st Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Chipilly Ridge, France, 9 August 1918. On his own initiative Sergeant May rushed an enemy machine-gun nest, capturing the gun and two prisoners. He displayed marked personal courage under heavy artillery and machine-gun fire, passing through the enemy barrage to get water, and rations to the men in the front line.
