The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Samuel Mascorella (ASN: 343479), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Mezy, France, 15 July 1918. On 15 July Private Mascorella volunteered and carried a message to headquarters after two runners had been killed while attempting to get through. He returned through the barrage with an answer to the message.

While serving with Headquarters Company, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 15 July 1918, during the Battle of the Marne, near Mezy, France, Private Mascorella volunteered after two runners had been killed to go through an enemy barrage to take a message to headquarters; he took the message and brought safely back the answer.
