The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Alfred Martinson (ASN: 273955), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company E, 127th Infantry Regiment, 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Carspach Woods, near Badricourt, Alsace, France, 19 July 1918. During an enemy raid on the sector held by the 3d platoon of Company E, 127th Infantry, which was preceded by a terrific and accurate barrage of high-explosive shells and machine-gun fire, and although surrounded by a superior enemy force, Private Martinson refused to surrender, but instead jumped from his trench and with his automatic rifle repulsed the enemy.
