The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Medical Corps) Claude Alexander Martin, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 23d Infantry Regiment (Attached), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Vaux, France, 1 July 1918. Captain Martin operated a battalion dressing station, and, although the station was practically destroyed by shell fire, he bravely and successfully treated the wounded and directed their safe evacuation.
