While serving with Company A, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, after being subjected to a terrific artillery barrage on the Marne Near Mezy, France, on 15 July 1918, Private Marshall continued to operate his automatic rifle and remained at his post in a strong point for three hours after being wounded.     The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Robert E. Marshall (ASN: 2180142), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Mezy, France, 15 July 1918. After being wounded in the head and subjected to an intense barrage, Private Marshall remained at his post for three hours, operating his automatic rifle until ordered to the rear.
