The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Maurice Aloysius Mannion (ASN: 1236408), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Apremont, France, 29 September 1918. During a hostile attack, Sergeant Mannion displayed exceptional courage and initiative in leading a patrol of the left flank of his platoon and driving off a superior number of the enemy who were attempting to encircle the flank, killing ten of them, capturing eight and putting the remainder to flight.
