The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private James Joseph Mahoney, Jr. (ASN: 2383890), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company G, 60th Infantry Regiment, 5th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cunel, France, 15 October 1918. Private Mahoney upon three occasions exposed himself to heavy machine-gun fire in attempting to work through the enemy lines to carry a message to a group which, due to enemy infiltration, had become isolated. Although mortally wounded, he insisted upon being carried to regimental headquarters in order to make a report of the information obtained.
