The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Howard E. Madsen (ASN: 1284515), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 115th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Bois-de-Consenvoye, France, 22 October 1918. When his platoon was fired on at close range by a machine gun, Sergeant Madsen went forward and killed two of the enemy with grenades, routing the other members of the crew.
