The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant David Madden (ASN: 2338718), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company E, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cunel, France, 7 October 1918. Due to the lifting of a heavy fog, Company E was caught on an open hillside, within 100 yards of the enemy’s line, and were forced to remain in the cover of shell holes for the entire day. Hearing a wounded man groaning in great pain, Sergeant Madden left his shelter and went to his rescue, carrying him through the terrific machine-gun and artillery fire to a shell hole, where he administered all the aid and comfort possible and then returned to his post through the same intense fire.
