By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant David Madden (ASN: 2338718), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company E, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 29 July 1918, while his company was in action near Roncheres, Sergeant Madden left his position of comparative safety, and in utter disregard of personal danger went through heavy rifle and machine gun fire to offer assistance to two men of his company who were wounded.

While serving with Company E, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant Madden displayed exceptional heroism and disregard for loss of life when his company attacked Woods 250 southwest of Cunel on 7 October 1918. Due to heavy fog lifting before the objective could be reached the company was caught on an open hillside swept by machine gun fire from all sides only one hundred yards away from the Boche line. Men were forced to remain in shell holes during the entire day. Hearing one of the men of his company moaning in great pain, and notwithstanding the great danger to himself, due to the close proximity to the enemy. Sergeant Madden walked to the wounded man and carried him to shelter in a shell hole where he administered comfort and first aid to him, afterwards returning to his post of duty through heavy shell fire in addition to machine gun fire.
