The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Walter C. Mack (ASN: 2711175), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 135th Machine-Gun Battalion, 37th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Eyne, Belgium, 2 November 1918. In the face of intense machine-gun fire, Private Mack voluntarily swam the Scheldt River to obtain information regarding the enemy. His successful return with the desired information enabled his company commander to so place his guns that they could be fired with great advantage.
