No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Edwin MacBeth (ASN: 1243698), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Sergeant MacBeth distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 111th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Fismette, France, 10 August 1918, in delivering a message through heavy enemy machine gun fire.

War Department, General Orders No. 37 (1919)The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Edwin MacBeth (ASN: 1243698), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 111th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fismette, France, 10 August 1918. Sergeant Mac Beth and another soldier voluntarily went through heavy machinegun fire to carry an important message to an advanced unit. Attracted by the cries of a wounded soldier while they were returning they went to his assistance and were endeavoring to rescue him when Sergeant Mac Beth’s companion was fatally wounded. Being unable to bring in the two wounded men by himself this soldier returned to the line and secured assistance.
