The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Jesse Allen Lunsford (ASN: 1320936), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company G, 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bellicourt, France, 29 September 1918. Corporal Lunsford attacked, single-handed, a machine-gun post from which a destructive fire was being directed against his company. While he was approaching the nest the machine-gun shot the butt off his rifle and cut a hole in his breeches, but he succeeded in getting close enough to the nest to throw four hand grenades into it and then killed the gunner with his bayonet.
