By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Milton E. Long, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the Machine Gun Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 15 July 1918, near Fossoy, France, Lieutenant Long was in charge of the four reserve guns of his company, and at the crisis when the enemy were advancing on Fossoy from Mezy, he place his guns on the right flank of the enemy.

While serving with the Machine Gun Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 12 October 1918, on Cunel Heights, France, after having been wounded by an enemy machine gun bullet, Lieutenant Long moved his platoon forward, located the enemy machine guns and cleaned the woods of them, capturing three guns and their entire personnel, thus displaying extraordinary courage and determination in carrying out his mission. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Milton E. Long, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with the Machine Gun Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Cunel Heights, France, 12 October 1918. After being severely wounded by a machine-gun bullet, Lieutenant Long displayed exceptional courage and determination by remaining with his platoon, moving it forward and clearing the woods of enemy machine guns, three of which he captured with their entire crews.
