The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal John Michael Lister (ASN: 2264913), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 363d Infantry Regiment, 91st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Waereghem, Belgium, 31 October 1918. When the progress of two front line companies had been stopped by the intense fire of enemy machine guns, and the enemy began to close in on these troops, Corporal Lister voluntarily assembled a squad of automatic riflemen and grenadiers and went forward to an exposed position, where he directed the fire of his squad until killed.
