The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant William Liniger (ASN: 2305455), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 126th Infantry Regiment, 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Romagne, France, 9 October 1918. After all the officers of his company had been killed or wounded an attack by his platoon was ordered on an enemy machine-gun nest. Receiving a mortal wound in the attack, which, captured the enemy nest, Sergeant Liniger struggled on until the objective had been reached, encouraging his men and setting them an example of his bravery.
