Sergeant Licklider his platoon leader having been wounded, took command of the platoon and consolidated his position under heavy fire; his coolness and energy being an inspiration to his men.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant John David Licklider (ASN: 57133), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Berzy-le-Sec, France, on 20 July 1918. Sergeant Licklider gave proof of unhesitating devotion and energy in brilliantly leading four men against a machine-gun, which was delivering intense fire, and capturing the gun.
