The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Robert Franklin Lewis (ASN: 1315851), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company G, 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bellicourt, France, 29 September 1918. His section having been stopped by a concealed machine-gun, Corporal Lewis on his own initiative, crawled forward alone over ground swept by machine-gun fire. Attacking the nest with bombs, and firing at it with his ride, he killed the entire crew, numbering seven, and thereby cleared the way for the further advance of his section.
