By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Infantry) Frank Nelson Lewis, United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and leading his company in an attack on the eastern side of Woods 250, southwest of Cunel, on the night of 5 – 6 October 1918, Captain Lewis was severely wounded in both arms and both legs. Notwithstanding this, he continued to direct the advance of his company, and his courageous action in shouting commands and encouraging words to his officers and men were largely responsible for the complete success of the attack, [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Frank Nelson Lewis, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cunel, France, October 5 – 6, 1918. Although severely wounded in both arms and both legs during the advance of his company on the night of October 5 – 6, Captain Lewis continued in command, and by his bravery and courage contributed materially to the complete success of the attack.
