By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Mechanic Edward T. Larkin (ASN: 107176), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery C, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the night of 14 July 1918, during the heaviest bombardment, Chief Mechanic Larkin took the place of a member of a gun crew that was killed. While performing these duties he was severely wounded in the abdomen; notwithstanding the suffering and pain, he continued in the performance of these duties until he was overcome from loss of blood.     The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Chief Mechanic Edward T. Larkin (ASN: 107176), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery C, 10th Field Artillery, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the Champagne-Marne defensive, France, July 14 – 15, 1918. When a member of a gun crew had been killed, Private Larkin took his place. While performing these duties, he himself was severely wounded in the abdomen but continued the performance of his duties, refusing to be evacuated until he was overcome from loss of blood.
