The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private James F. Kobernat (ASN: 1429404), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 307th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Forest of Argonne, France, 11 October 1918. Private Kobernat succeeded in establishing an automatic rifle post under heavy machine-gun fire. In the face of this heavy fire he continually advanced until he was killed.
