The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Paul R. Knight, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 308th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Binarville, France, October 3 – 5, 1918. Although he had been twice wounded, First Lieutenant Knight led his company in four attempts to cut through a heavy barbed-wire entanglement to capture Hill 205 in the Forest of Argonne, France, in order to reach two battalions of his regiment which had been cut off by the enemy.
