The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Henry Knight (ASN: 546170), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Crezancy, France, 15 July 1918. After his company had been relieved Private Knight remained to guide the new organization through the intense artillery and machine-gun fire, and for three days carried food and water to the wounded, who could not be removed during the bombardment.

    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Henry Knight (ASN: 546170), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company D, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private Knight showed exceptional bravery in carrying messages under the most violent machine gun and shell fire near Crezancy, France, 15 July 1918. When his company was relieved he remained as guide for the new organization, and for 3 days and nights carried food and water to the wounded who could not be removed because of shell fire.
