    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Ralph E. Knauff (ASN: 1250787), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery D, 107th Field Artillery, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Mont St. Martin, France, 19 August 1918. Seeing another soldier fall seriously wounded, Private Knauff ran to his assistance and, under heavy shell fire, carried him to safety.
