The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Walter W. Klinger (ASN: 1278414), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 113th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Bois d’Etrayes, France, 23 October 1918. Two of his companions having been lulled, Sergeant Klinger advanced alone upon one of the enemy’s strongest machine-gun nests and destroyed it with hand grenades. He was later killed while administering first aid to a wounded soldier.
