By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Clarence Orlando Kjose (ASN: 2186117), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the Machine Gun Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 15 October 1918, at Clare Chenes Woods, France, Corporal Kjose advanced with two squads in front of the company which he was supporting and after being twice stopped by enfilading machine gun fire and losing one squad, continued to lead his squad through the woods and put out of action an enemy machine gun which had been holding up the advance of the infantry. Corporal Kjose has shown extraordinary courage and heroism in all the engagements he was in. He was wounded 12 October 1918, and again on 14 October 1918, but refused to be evacuated.
