The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) John Kjellberg, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Machine-Gun Company, 102d Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Trugny, France, 23 July 1918. After being wounded, Second Lieutenant Kjellberg refused to be evacuated, but gallantly continued in command of his platoon, firing the machine gun himself when the crew was depleted until he was sounded a second time.
