The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Grant Kennedy (ASN: 2339022), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company G, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cunel, France, 13 October 1918. When his platoon commander was wounded, Corporal Kennedy reorganized the platoon, while under severe fire, placing his men so as best to repel the enemy’s counterattack. He inspired his men by his own personal bravery. Wounded and sent to a hospital, he returned to the front line after a week’s treatment, being severely wounded while leading his men in an attack.

    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Grant Kennedy (ASN: 2339022), United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company G, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Corporal Kennedy displayed extraordinary heroism in action between Nantillois and Cunel during attack on the Argonne Sector, 10 October 1918 to 25 October 1918. When his platoon commander was wounded, Corporal Kennedy immediately took command and formed the platoon into combat groups while under heavy enemy artillery barrage and machine gun fire. Showing little regard for his own safety he placed his men in time to help check a counterattack. Finally, he was wounded and ordered to a hospital. After a week’s treatment he returned to the front line and was mortally wounded while leading his men in an attack. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]
