    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Infantry) Hubert W. Keith, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Lieutenant Keith was first to lead a platoon across the Vesle River under heavy shell, grenade and machine gun fire. He exhibited coolness and excellent leadership in directing the advance and fire of his men.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Hubert W. Keith, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, northeast of Cunel, France, 22 October 1918. First Lieutenant Keith courageously led his company in the attack on Hill 299, exposed to heavy machine-gun fire. He quickly organized his position, and later repelled an enemy counterattack. Although wounded on the evening of the 22d, he continued with his company until the following day.
