The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Abe Kauffman (ASN: 128071), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery F, 7th Field Artillery, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at during the enemy counterattack on Cantigny, France, 28 May 1918. Private Kauffman refused to leave his gun after he had lost a finger during the enemy, but continued to perform his duties until so severely wounded as to be unable to assist in serving his piece.
