The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Howard M. Karg (ASN: 2405429), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 309th Infantry Regiment, 78th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at St. Juvin, France, 5 November 1918. Under terrific enemy bombardment Sergeant Karg carried a soldier, who was overcome by gas, for a distance of 50 yards over a road exposed to the direct fire of enemy machine-gun snipers and shell fire, to a place of safety.
