The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Charles J. Kane (ASN: 51516), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Vaux, France, 1 July 1918. Attempting to bring his captain, who was lying wounded and exposed to fire, to shelter, Private Kane was himself killed, thereby sacrificing his life in an effort to rescue his commanding officer.
