During the great German artillery bombardment of 15 July Wagoner Jones was driving a ration cart to the front lines when he was caught in the heavy bombardment. both his mules were killed and he was blown from his seat by a shell explosion, the same shell killing a comrade on the cart ahead of him. Catching a stray mule and borrowing another, Wagoner Jones returned with his comrade to the company, after which he delivered his rations. After his team became frightened and ran away, he remained in the fight throughout the attack of the day. While delivering rations he was wounded, but he completed his task before he would allow his wound to be dressed.
