The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Herbert Joseph Jones, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 6th Field Artillery, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Coullemelle, France, 4 July 1918. During a heavy enemy bombardment, Lieutenant Jones exposed himself fearlessly to go to the assistance of a wounded soldier, being killed by shell fire while engaged in this heroic action.
