The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Clarence M. Jones (ASN: 1247107), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 112th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Chatel-Chehery, France, 8 October 1918. Ordered to clear Hill 244 of the enemy, Sergeant Jones led a patrol of seven men up a steep slope under enemy grenade fire by which four of his men were killed. Pushing on with the remaining three he silenced three machinegun nests and twelve snipers, driving off the remainder of the Germans. He then sent one of his men back with a message and with the other two held the position for two hours until he was relieved.
