The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Major Alvey Jones (ASN: 202846), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, Motor Battalion, 1st Ammunition Train, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Beaumont, France, 22 February 1918, and at Missy aux Bois, France, 23 July 1918. Near Beaumont, Sergeant Major Jones displayed marked courage by refusing to be evacuated after being wounded remaining on duty under severe shell fire and preventing a traffic blockade. At Missy aux Bois, an enemy shell set fire to a pile of ammunition, which he was salvaging. Disregarding danger, he managed to save a larger pile nearby, extinguishing the flames. Though he was slightly wounded, he continued his work until every box of ammunition was salvaged.
