The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Swan Johnson (ASN: 43105), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company G, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Soissons, France, 18 July 1918. Sergeant Swan personally reconnoitered a heavily guarded enemy position and killed one of the foe. In spite of being seriously wounded, he succeeded in returning to his patrol, informing them of the enemy’s position and thereby enabling them to capture the entire enemy force.
