The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Gustave Hilding Johnson (ASN: 1714321), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery C, 305th Field Artillery, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Chery-Chartreuve, France, 16 August 1918. Corporal Johnson assisted Lieutenant Robinson in rescuing the body of an officer from a burning ammunition dump which was under fire.
