The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private George S. Johnson (ASN: 2827875), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fleville, France, 4 October 1918. When his organization was halted by machine-gun fire from the front, Private Johnson, accompanied by a noncommissioned officer, advanced upon and destroyed the enemy machine-gun position, forcing four of the enemy to surrender, and thereby insuring the further advance of his unit.
