The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Charles B. Johnson, Jr. (ASN: 133021), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery A, 101st Field Artillery, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, north of Chateau-Thierry, France, 19 July 1918. While his battery position was under shell fire and its ammunition dump had been hit and shells were exploding in it and the crew was ordered to leave Sergeant Johnson remained, put out three fires in the dump, and afterwards, under heavy fire, searched for and brought wounded to shelter.
