The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Edwin A. Johnsen (ASN: 46659), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Exermont, France, 4 October 1918. Sergeant Johnsen led his section in the attack through heavy artillery fire. Although severely wounded by a high-explosive shell, he remained with his organization until he was unable to continue forward, due to the loss of blood.
