The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Colonel (Corps of Engineers) Henry Clay Jewett, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 316th Engineers, 91st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the Argonne-Meuse offensive, September 25 to 4 October 1918. Assigned to the command of an infantry brigade, Colonel Jewett was directed to go forward, find his brigade, and consolidate his regiments, which had become separated. He crossed territory under terrific fire and pulled his rear regiment to the aid of the regiment in the front, which was seriously engaged, thereafter commanding the movements of both regiments in a highly creditable manner.
