    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Dean N. Jenks, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Fossoy, France, 16 July 1918. Lieutenant Jenks fearlessly led his company in an attack under a heavy bombardment, encouraging his men by his example. He was killed by shell fire while in the performance of this act.

    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Infantry) Dean N. Jenks, United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 16 July 1918, at Fossoy, France, Lieutenant Jenks exhibited the highest type of personal heroism and valor in leading his company in an attack under heavy bombardment, inspiring his men by his coolness and presence.
