The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Forest G. Jeffery (ASN: 1590360), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, north of Cunel, France, 20 October 1918. At a time when his platoon was held up by machine-gun fire from the front, Private Jeffery with two other comrades went forward and attacked the machine-gun position from the flank, capturing one officer, two sergeants, and six privates, and enabling his platoon to further advance without loss of men.

    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Forest G. Jeffery (ASN: 1590360), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company M 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in company with two of his comrades, Private Jeffery, on 20 October 1918, at Claire Chenes, France, while advancing lines were held up by machine gun fire from the woods in front, did voluntarily and without orders go around the machine gun and into the woods from the flank, capturing the machine gun and one officer, two sergeants and six privates, thus enabling the lines to advance.
